Why I Volunteer: Emma
Our featured volunteer this month is Emma Joynson! Thank you for everything you do, Emma. We are lucky to have you at TAGS.
1. What encouraged you to become a volunteer with TAGS?
Many years ago, our family had to make the heartbreaking decision to rehome our dog. Before then, I had no idea just how many dogs were in need of homes and how many wonderful people donated their lives to rescues, ensuring those dogs had the best possible lives.
Soon after that, I learned that TAGS was based just up the road from my rural village, and have done what I can to help out since then.
2. What are your roles at TAGS?
Currently, I am an assistant trainer for the 8 week course that comes with all adoptions. I am also learning to assist with intakes and behavioural assessments.
3. What do you like about it?
I love TAGS unique approach to adoptions. The adoption process is incredibly thorough to ensure happy placements on the part of both the dogs and the new family. The training course is an excellent way to ensure that the dog is fitting into the home well, and to address any potential issues that may arise.
I’ve always had a passion for training my own dogs, so helping out with others has been an excellent experience.
4. Do you ever get discouraged? If so, what makes you continue to volunteer ?
Admittedly, there are times I feel slightly discouraged. Sometimes it seems that people are so unwilling to listen and learn about the horrors of puppy mills and why supporting backyard breeding is a problem. But in the grand scheme of things, things have been changing for the better. And it’s because of those that haven’t lost hope on saving animals, those who dedicate their time, their homes, their money, and their hearts to making sure they are doing the best they can to educate and speak up for the animals when they have no voice of their own.
5. What are some of the memorable moments you have from volunteering with TAGS?
Over the years there have been so many memorable moments, both laughter inducing and heartbreaking. Seeing my first foster go to his new home was a combination of those emotions. In my heart I knew it was the best decision, and I know he’s got an excellent home thanks to the wonderful work that TAGS does.
6. How long have you been a volunteer ?
I started volunteering with TAGS approximately 10 years ago whilst completing my high school community involvement hours. Due to work and educational demands, I have not been able to be a constant presence within the TAGS program for extended periods between then and now.
Last summer I trained Agility 101 in the TAGS dog park (something we’re looking to run again this summer!), and have been working with Kathy in the adoption classes since January of this year.
7. Any other comments/things you would like to share about your experiences ?
Volunteering with an animal rescue has been an incredibly eye opening experience. I recommend that everyone dedicates at least a little bit of their time to help out with a rescue or shelter in any way that they can, even if it’s only a couple times.
What I’ve learned through working with TAGS is incomparable to anything else I’ve ever done.
